DriveHQ WebDAV feature allows an easy and convenient way of accessing DriveHQ online storage.
You can map a remote Drive without installing any client software. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux.
You can easily drag and drop files / folders, or open, edit and save remote files directly.
- What is WebDAV?
Simply put, WebDAV is a set of HTTP extensions that allow users to edit and manage files collaboratively on a remote web server.
WebDAV is a standard protocol and is supported on Windows, Mac and Linux. Most operating systems now can map WebDAV server
as a network drive without installing any client software.
- I am a DriveHQ user, how do I map DriveHQ online storage as a WebDAV drive?
On Windows, please visit How to map DriveHQ WebDAV drive on Windows;
on Mac, please visit: How to map DriveHQ WebDAV disk on Mac. For Linux and Unix users, please search your
OS documentation or search online for "mount WebDAV".
- How to use a WebDAV drive?
A WebDAV drive is just like an external drive or a network drive. You can drag and drop files / folders;
or directly open, edit and save files.
Because files must be downloaded from or uploaded to DriveHQ server on the Internet, a WebDAV drive
is inherently slower than a local drive, an external drive or a network drive on a local file server. Also because
WebDAV doesn't support local caching, cannot resume interrupted downloads / uploads, it is recommended using
DriveHQ WebDAV drive for quick, convenient and light use only. If you need to upload / download a lot of files, or very large files,
DriveHQ FileManager, DriveHQ Online Backup or DriveHQ FTP is recommended.
- How much does it cost to use DriveHQ WebDAV drive?
There is no extra charge for WebDAV access. It is offered as a standard feature of
DriveHQ Cloud Storage 5.0 service. Every DriveHQ account is WebDAV-enabled. The WebDAV feature does not include any
extra storage space.
You can use our 1GB free storage, or check out our pricing plans
for more storage space.
- What is the download / upload limit on WebDAV?
For paid members, the monthly download limit is 4 times of the subscribed storage space.
It covers all downloads from FileManager, website, FTP or WebDAV, etc. For free service members, the initial monthly maximum
download bytes is only 200MB.
You can get up to 1GB free download bytes by trying more DriveHQ services and features.
By default, a free service user can upload 50MB of data each time. WebDAV implementations on certain operating systems
also limit max file size
to about 50MB. If you need to upload / download larger files, DriveHQ FileManager and DriveHQ FTP service are more
reliable and efficient.
- What is the No.1 technical advice that users should know about WebDAV?
WebDAV drive mapping appears to be the easiest solution for remote storage. However,
it it far from the best solution. In fact, it is recommended only for quick and light use only. For users who need to
use remote storage everyday, it is strongly recommended using DriveHQ FileManager. A few quick reasons include:
- WebDAV drive is slower; the protocol has more overhead, plus it doesn't support caching;
- WebDAV drive does not support resuming. If network is interrupted while you are using it, you could lose your
file or you may have to upload / download the whole file again;
- WebDAV drive may limit maximum file size (to 50MB) on certain operating systems
- WebDAV is too tightly integrated with the file system, but may not be reliable enough. For example, laptop users may
frequently unplug the network, or walk around the office and lose wireless connection;
- Many operating systems automatically create thumbnail images when you access an image folder. This can use a
lot of download bytes as the operating system may download all original image files in the background.
DriveHQ FileManager is far more efficient as it only downloads the thumbnail files and it can cache the files.
- WebDAV also lacks advanced features like remote sharing and collaboration, automatic folder synchronization,
file and folder publishing, etc.
- I am not a DriveHQ user, and I have received a share
notification e-mail from my friend. Can I access the shared folder through
WebDAV to download all files / folders at once?
No. You must become a DriveHQ member to use the WebDAV drive.
Please read the share notification e-mail, you will find instructions there.
Sign up a free DriveHQ account using the email address;
then map a WebDAV drive using your username and password. The shared files will appear in the
special virtual folder:
\DriveHQ Share\OtherUserName\ShareName
- What access level will I have for a shared folder from a friend?
If you are not a DriveHQ member, you will have read-only access to a shared folder,
even if the folder owner has authorized higher level of access to you. To access at the authorized level,
please sign up an account on DriveHQ.com.
- Can I share a folder to one user with write permission, and another user
with read-only permission?
Yes. You can logon www.drivehq.com or DriveHQ FileManager, share the folder with "Full Access"
permission to one user; and then share the same folder to another user with read-only permission. When sharing the same folder again,
you must use a different share name as "the share names must be unique".
To accesss a shared folder with write permission, a user must be a DriveHQ member. Otherwise, he/she will have read-only permission.
- Can I just let everybody access my folder without an account and without logon?
It is not supported in WebDAV. However, it is supported on the website and FTP.
You must be a Paid Member or a True Member. You can logon www.drivehq.com or DriveHQ FileManager and publish a folder.
Files in a published folder can be downloaded by any Internet users without logon using "Publish URLs".
- How about security? Does it support data encryption?
Is it secure for financial or healthcare industry?
DriveHQ WebDAV server supports HTTPS/SSL. When you map the DriveHQ remote drive,
you should use the HTTPS URL, such as:
https://www.drivehq.com/webdav/USERNAME
DriveHQ WebDAV drive does not support "Encrypted Folder" feature, which is considered to be more secure than HTTPS/SSL alone.
Certain industries have high security standard or special government rules. DriveHQ service can be used in a very secure way that meets
such requirements. Ultimately, DriveHQ is a general service provider, you need to set your own security rules.
DriveHQ service has built in with highest level of security features in this industry. DriveHQ FileManager client software and
DriveHQ Online Backup client software both support SSL and encryted folder, which guarantee that your data is secure both on
transimission and stored in our data center. DriveHQ data center is
co-located with Hurricane Electric with 24x7x365 onsite security. DriveHQ FTP server supports FTP over SSL.
So if you use DriveHQ service with SSL and file encryption, it should meet almost all security requirements.
